Surge in foreclosures is predicted
The nation's real estate horror story is about to get worse, if a prediction
by the industry's leading foreclosure-tracking company comes true.
Speaking at the National Association of Real Estate Editor's Spring
Journalism Conference, Realty Trac senior vice president Rick Sharga
revealed that another wave of toxic loan foreclosures is about
to rock the market.
It will be as bad as the peak of the subprime mortgage foreclosure spike
in the winter of 2007-08, his chart showed. This mountain of foreclosures
will peak at the beginning of 2011 but will recede much more quickly
than the first wave.
The key difference is that the next wave of foreclosures will be driven
by unemployment. Sharga's Realty Trac charts show 2005 as a normal year,
with about 800,000 total U. S. foreclosure filings. The number has
climbed steadily since then, with a projected 4.3 million this year.
